Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other parts of the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the area around the bladder. This tissue behaves like the womb lining — it thickens and bleeds during your monthly period — but because it has nowhere to go, it causes pain, swelling, and sometimes scarring. Women in Ghana and West Africa often see a doctor for endometriosis because of very painful periods, difficulty getting pregnant, or ongoing pelvic pain that affects daily life.
Book an evaluation with a healthcare provider immediately if you experience or present with:
When you visit the doctor for endometriosis, they will ask you about your period — how painful it is, how long it lasts, and how it affects your daily life. They may gently examine your abdomen and pelvis, and they might request an ultrasound scan to look at your womb and ovaries. Your doctor will explain the findings to you and discuss treatment options that suit your situation, so you do not need to feel nervous about the appointment.

The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully known, but it is thought to happen when tissue from the womb lining travels to other parts of the body, possibly during menstruation. It can also run in families, so if your mother or sister has it, you may be at higher risk. It is not caused by anything you did wrong, and it is not contagious.
While some women find that a warm compress or rest helps ease the pain temporarily, herbs and home remedies cannot cure endometriosis or stop it from getting worse. It is important to see a doctor so you can get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Delaying medical care can lead to complications such as scarring or difficulty getting pregnant.
Endometriosis can make it harder to get pregnant, but many women with the condition do conceive, especially with the right medical support. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of protecting your fertility. If you are trying to get pregnant and have not succeeded after 12 months, speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
Treatment options include pain-relief medicines, hormonal treatments such as contraceptive pills that help regulate or stop periods, and in some cases surgery to remove the affected tissue. Your doctor will recommend the best option based on your symptoms and whether you want to have children. Many women find significant relief with the right treatment plan.
Normal period cramps usually ease within one to two days and respond well to paracetamol or ibuprofen. If your pain is severe enough to stop you from working, going to school, or doing daily activities, lasts longer than two days, or keeps coming back every month, it may be a sign of endometriosis. Only a doctor can confirm the diagnosis, so it is worth getting checked if your periods are regularly very painful.
