Understanding Headache

Headaches can be caused by many things, including stress, not drinking enough water, too much sun or heat, lack of sleep, and skipping meals. In West Africa, dehydration and heat are very common triggers. Sometimes headaches are a sign of high blood pressure or malaria, so it is important to pay attention to other symptoms you may have.

Drinking plenty of water, resting in a cool and quiet room, and placing a cold or warm cloth on your forehead can help ease a headache. Gently massaging your temples or the back of your neck may also bring relief. Over-the-counter pain medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen, taken as directed, are commonly used and effective for mild headaches.

You should see a doctor if your headache is very severe, comes on suddenly like a thunderclap, or does not go away after a day or two. Also seek care if your headache comes with fever, stiff neck, vomiting, blurred vision, or weakness in your body, as these can be signs of a more serious condition like malaria or meningitis. Do not ignore a headache that keeps coming back or gets worse over time.

A doctor will first try to find out what is causing your headache before recommending treatment. Common treatments include pain-relieving medicines, treatment for infections like malaria if that is the cause, and medicines to control blood pressure if it is too high. In some cases, the doctor may refer you for further tests to rule out other conditions.

Drinking enough water throughout the day, eating regular meals, and getting enough sleep each night can help prevent many headaches. Try to avoid staying too long in the hot sun without shade or a hat, and take breaks if you are working in a stressful environment. Managing stress through rest, light exercise, or talking to someone you trust can also reduce how often headaches occur.
